Bulky trash, waste, cheap materials: pure gold! At least in the eyes of many active designers. “Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded!” explores the subject of rubbish and presents approaches to using existing trash to create valuable products.

The international exhibition project presents 76 objects by 53 designers, selected by 7 international curators, and will be expanded by inviting local designers to their works at every venue of the tour. The exhibition, conceived by Volker Albus, introduces a new global generation of ecologically and ethically sustainable designers and brings together multi-perspective solutions for a serious global problem of the present: waste and its processing.

The littering of the oceans and their consequences for the ecosystem have long been brought to our consciousness. We regularly get pictures of giant dumps in underserved regions of the planet – but the everyday handling of what we commonly call waste is changing only slowly. The theme of the exhibition, “Upcycling” – the reuse of already processed material as a raw material for new and higher-quality objects – sharpens the view for alternative production techniques and draws attention to contemporary European and non-European design developments. The designs use seemingly inferior raw materials, unconventionally combine diverse objects or creatively process unwanted by-products.

On 13.11.2018 / 18:00 Silvia Knüppel is invited to give a lecture at Kunsthochschule Kassel.

In winter semester 18/19 she will be a visiting lecturer at the product design department.

Priveekollektie Contemporary Art | Design celebrates its 12,5 year anniversary in 2018. During Heritage Day in Heusden, the new group exhibition ‘Spectrum of Time’ will open in the gallery on September 9 for this special occasion. The exhibition embodies a selection of works by Priveekollektie’s represented artists and designers alongside work by young, up-and-coming talent.

As part of the ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) 100th anniversary celebrations, the co-creativeexhibition format Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded! celebrates its premiere. The exhibition, devised by Volker Albus, introduces a new global generation of designers who work in an ecological and ethically sustainable manner, and it gathers multiperspectival approaches for a grave problem facing us today: waste and its recycling.
Although there has long been an awareness of marine litter pollution and the grave consequences for the ecosystem, and although we are constantly confronted with pictures of gigantic rubbish dumps in deprived regions of the planet, our day-today approach to what we generally refer to as waste is only changing slowly. The exhibition theme of upcycling – the re-use of raw materials that have already been processed to create new objects of greater value – aims to raise awareness of alternative production techniques, while simultaneously pointing up contemporary European and non-European design developments. The designs use what appear to be inferior starting materials, combine different kinds of objects in an unconventional way, or creatively process unwanted by-products.

The ifa has structured the exhibition as an innovative co-creative format. Curators from a total of seven regions present 53 designers with 76 pieces relating to this theme.

Drückeberger cupboard and Pl(a)ywood cabinet will be shown at the NEW OLDS exhibition (ifa) at the Novosibirsk State Art Museum in Russia.

“Together with curator Volker Albus, the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e. V. (ifa) presents new olds. Design between Tradition and Innovation, with sixty exhibits that explore the relationship between tradition and innovation in contemporary design. The variety and topicality of the many approaches are bundled around the themes material, construction, configuration, production, and traditional use. Forty-five designers and design teams from Germany, other European countries and the USA enter here into an intensive dialogue, and the international nature of the show is further emphasised by its world tour with its connections to the local cultures on site.
Design has a short and highly successful history in the West. It quickly became a key feature of a collective understanding of culture, and is correspondingly appreciated and communicated. Outside the western hemisphere too design is gaining significance, and not just as a profession. What are seen as successful idioms are copied and varied, but many of the motifs that are sold as “new” actually derive from a historical context and formal idiom, and are self-contained products of one country or culture, representing a new interpretation of traditional forms. This exhibition looks at aspects of the “new” and the “old” in a range of objects and groups of objects, discusses differences and new combinations, presents trends in recycling and redesign, and looks at the transformation of design classics and traditional ways of using new materials.
This exhibition aims to show the international and complex nature of this discourse in contemporary design in three ways. Firstly, we invite the general public to enjoy the visual and sensual presentation of the exhibits. Secondly, the accompanying events and education programme will focus on dialogue in workshops that are tailored to each location of the exhibition tour, and the design experts working there. The third element is documentation of the exhibition in a blog, showing the work of local designers exploring issues related to new olds that is presented in the exhibition space or in a special additional show. Documenting all the works that are produced in accompanying events during the entire tour will further facilitate dialogue and the exchange of ideas on contemporary theory and design practice in a variety of nations and cultures.”

The project HOME ZOO COVERS will be part of the Hubertus Wald Kinderreich during the TIERE exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Crafts Hamburg.

Hubertus Wald Kids’ World
A fantasy world, a Garden of Things, where kids can learn in a hands-on way and play through specially conceived scenarios to bring home to them how many different ways there are to design and make things. This is where they can experience for themselves what odd and quirky results the imagination of designers in clothes, furniture, typology or appliances can produce. In this magical world stretching over 250 square metres, kids from 5 to 12 can try their hand at being designers, architects or artists. They can shape things, invent and build things, take photographs and make cartoon films, dress up or play with shadows. Grown-ups interested in design can also discover unusual and innovative things in our hands-on area, watched over by helpful attendants.

“Animals are a frequent subject of debate these days. Do they have a soul? How much do they suffer? Are we under any obligation to protect their individuality by granting them rights? Are human beings morally authorized to do as they want with animals, to consume them, rob them of their freedom and train them for the purposes of entertainment? Scientific discussion takes the relationship between animal and human being very seriously. In the everyday life of our consumption-oriented society, on the other hand, that relationship oscillates between unreflecting exploitation and sentimental anthropomorphization. Against the background of these contrasts, the exhibition will be geared primarily towards informing visitors and sensitizing them to ways and means of respectful co-existence.”

The co-creative exhibition has been conceived and brought together by Volker Albus, designer and professor at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in conjunction with six other international curators. It gathers multiperspectival approaches from 53 designers for the re-use of raw materials that have already been processed to create new objects of greater value. The exhibition theme of upcycling aims to raise awareness of alternative production techniques while pointing up contemporary European and non-European design developments.
In addition, Axel Kufus, designer and professor at the Berlin University of the Arts, will be launching a digital platform which, extending beyond the exhibition itself, will serve as a repository of knowledge and a network for the international maker scene.

Pure Gold. Upcycled! Upgraded! is an ifa exhibition project to mark the institute’s 100th anniversary. The exhibition in Hamburg will be its only showing in Germany and the first stop on a ten-year tour of 20 venues around the world.

ifa (Insitut für Auslandsbeziehungen celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2017. Germany’s oldest organisation for the cultivation of foreign cultural relations was founded in 1917 as a “work of peace in the midst of war”. ifa is now considered a competence centre for international cultural relations and artistic discourse. It offers comprehensive activities around cultural exchange and civic conflict resolution. The basis of its international orientation is a far-reaching network of partners both in Germany and abroad. Its theme for the 2017 anniversary year is “Cultures of We”.

The exhibition Roundabout Baltic is shown at the Museum of Applied Arts and Design in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The exhibition is co-organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and will be on display for six weeks as part of Design Week Lithuania 2017.
The exhibition was presented in Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Iceland and gained huge popularity. Until now it was seen by more than 50 000 viewers. An amazing international design exhibition opens on 3rd of May 2017 at the Museum of Applied Arts and Design in Vilnius to present objects created in eight countries connected by the coastline of the Baltic Sea. Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka is the curator of the Roundabout Baltic exhibition organized by the Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola. The cooperation of this team has brought about many celebrated exhibitions promoting Polish design abroad, including Unpolished, Moderna and Polska Folk.
