The Goethe-Institut in partnership with IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, the German institute for international relations) and the Vargas Museum presents Pure Gold – UPCYCLED! UPGRADED! an exhibition that highlights re- and upcycling in design.
Composed of 76 pieces by 53 designers from 7 regions in the world, Pure Gold is currently touring the world and will count Manila as one of its stops this year. This initiative of IFA is an exhibition with the theme of upcycling – the re-use of raw materials that have already been processed to create new objects of greater value – aims to raise awareness of alternative production techniques, while simultaneously pointing up contemporary European and non-European design developments. The designs use what appear to be inferior starting materials, combine different kinds of objects in an unconventional way, or creatively process unwanted by-products.

The Drückeberger cupboard and Pl(a)ywood cabinet #1 are part of the >new olds< exhibition (ifa).
Ausstellung: new olds thematisiert das Spannungsfeld zwischen Tradition und Innovation im aktuellen Design. Insgesamt 60 Objekte zeigen Redesign und Readymade, traditionelle Verarbeitung neuer Materialien und die Transformation von Designklassikern. 45 Designer und Designergruppen, die ihren Arbeitsschwerpunkt in Deutschland, anderen Ländern Europas sowie den USA haben, führen diese intensive Diskussion. Der internationale Aspekt dieses Diskurses im aktuellen Design wird in dreifacher Hinsicht reflektiert: Die ifa-Ausstellung präsentiert zu den in Deutschland arbeitenden Designern auch Designer, die in weiteren Ländern Europas und den USA arbeiten. Darüber hinaus lädt das ifa jede beteiligte Institution der internationalen Tournee ein, lokale Designer mit in der Ausstellung zu zeigen, die das Thema des Neuen und des Alten in ihren Arbeiten vertreten. Und als weiteres Element bietet new olds einen Blog an, der die Objekte der Ausstellung sowie die Arbeiten der Designer des jeweiligen Gastlandes präsentiert und so den internationalen Diskurs auch auf dieser Ebene führt.

Designers are creators of models, prototypes, and propositions [who] occupy a dialectical space between the world that is and the world that can be. Informed by the past and the present, their activityis oriented towards the future. They operate in situations that call for interventions, and they have the unique ability to turn these interventions into material and immaterial forms.

Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung Militanter Optimismus* / Plakativer Aktivismus. Global Design Politics steht Design in seiner politischen und gesellschaftlichen Dimension.
Verbindet sich aktives Handeln mit Strategien, die sich der Ironie, der Poesie, der Subversion oder der Provokation bedienen, werden Worte, Symbole, Zeichen und Objekte zu machtvollen Agenten im Kontext gesellschaftspolitischer Aktion. Anhand von ausgewählten historischen und gegenwärtigen Positionen der letzten fünfzig Jahre zeigt die Ausstellung, wie sich Design als radikale ästhetische Praxis den wesentlichen Diskursen der jeweiligen Zeit annimmt. So werden gegenwärtige Konditionen kritisch verhandelt, Alternativen geschaffen, Brüche erzeugt und neue Visionen entwickelt.
Die Ausstellung umfasst 10–12 internationale Projekte, unter ihnen l’Atelier Populaire (FR), Global Tools (IT), Maxivive (NG), Institute for Applied Autonomy (USA), Ruben Pater (NL), Superflux (UK/IN), Tactical Technology Collective (D), Silvia Knüppel (D), Ayzit Bostan (D) und andere.
Die Ausstellung und die Veranstaltungen werden kuratiert von Alexandra Weigand.
* “Militanter Optimismus” ist der Begriff, den der nigerianische Künstler Logor als wesentliche Voraussetzung für einen unermüdlichen persönlichen Einsatz verwendet.
